The Village of Gilbert was founded around the mid to late 1800's. It is the hometown of U.S. Lieutenant General, Claire Lee Chennault (September 6, 1893 – July 27, 1958). Chennault was an American military aviator best known for his leadership of the "Flying Tigers."
